Livingstonia Community Day Secondary School, located in the mountainous Livingstonia community along the Nyika National Park border in northern Rumphi District, enrolls about 400 students, but only 250 attend school regularly—130 boys and 120 girls.

In 2019, the school received support from Solon Foundation to construct a girls’ hostel designed to accommodate 60 girls. However, only 35 girls currently stay in the hostel, while many others rent quarters around the trading center due to lack of proper sleeping conditions.

The Current Situation:

• Out of 35 girls in the hostel, only 5 have mattresses, which they brought from home—leaving their families with fewer sleeping resources.
• 30 girls sleep on mats (mkeka or mjavi) or directly on the floor.
• Many girls choose not to stay at the hostel due to poor sleeping conditions, making them vulnerable to external risks.

Our Goal: A Mattress for Every Girl!

We aim to raise K3,600,000 ($2,000) to purchase 60 new mattresses, ensuring that each girl in the hostel has a clean, comfortable place to sleep and focus on her studies.

Cost Breakdown:

• 1  4inch 3/4 mattress = K60,000 ($33)
• Total needed: 60 mattresses
• Additional Support: If we exceed our goal, we will also purchase timber to build beds with labor support from Livingstonia Technical College’s Carpentry and Joinery Department, providing students with hands-on experience.
